ELK FIRE UPDATE 7/14/26 - 12:00pm

July 14 – Noon
Elk Fire Update
Acres: 574 acres
Start Date: 7/9/2026
Containment: 0%
Cause: Lightning
Fuels: Timber (litter and understory)
Resources: 202 personnel are currently assigned to the fire.

Fire Information: (970) 299-5357

The Elk Fire, located north of Lake City, Colorado, has burned 574 acres in the Uncompahgre Wilderness and remains 0% contained. The incident is being managed by Wyoming Interagency Type 3 Incident Management Team 1.

Fire activity increased yesterday, with torching and active fire spread through heavy dead and down timber. Approximately 70–90% of the fuels in the fire area consist of dead trees, contributing to moderate fire behavior, including torching, short crown runs, and spot fires. Fire activity remained moderate overnight.
The fire continues to burn in remote, rugged wilderness terrain. Due to the fire's location, the inability to safely access it by ground, and the high risk associated with emergency extraction or medical evacuation, firefighters are using indirect suppression tactics around the perimeter of the fire. These tactics allow crews to work safely while establishing a secure containment footprint. Natural barriers, roads, and other strategic landscape features are being used to build fireline and protect values at risk. Firefighter safety remains the top priority.

Today:
• Division Alpha will assess opportunities to improve indirect fireline and protect values at risk.
• Division X-Ray will coordinate with aircraft to moderate fire behavior and limit fire spread.
• The Structure Protection Group, comprised primarily of engine crews, will continue structure assessments and protection efforts along Highway 149.
• Night Operations will assess fire activity near Highway 149, infrastructure, and structures.

Thunderstorms are expected this afternoon and evening, bringing the potential for outflow winds up to 50 mph. Moisture is expected to increase beginning today.
Smoke will become increasingly visible from the Lake City and Gunnison areas.
Closures and Evacuations: Forest Service Road 866 (Alpine Plateau Road) remains closed to the public due to fire operations.

Highway 149 remains open, but motorists should expect increased firefighter traffic and a reduced speed limit in the area. Please slow down and use caution when traveling through the incident area. There may be personnel set up on private property. Fire vehicles will be traveling in and out of Lake City.
PLEASE DO NOT STOP AT THE OPERATIONS SITE ALONG HWY 149 FOR ANY REASON.
On July 13, the Hinsdale County Sheriff's Office issued a GET READY (Green) evacuation notice for several evacuation zones due to the Elk Fire. This includes properties along Highway 149 from the Hinsdale County line to the Town of Lake City, as well as properties within Lake City and areas south, east, and west of town. Exact boundaries and addresses can be found on the Evacuation Map, available here: https://protect.genasys.com/search?z=10.524131248991646&latlon=38.189885317861666%2C-107.20766635760157

The Gunnison County Sheriff's Office has also issued a Pre-Evacuation Notice for evacuation zone GNN-220 in southern Gunnison County. This includes properties along Highway 149 north of the Hinsdale County line, south of the Whinnery Ranch gravel pit, and extending east and west to the National Forest boundaries.

ELK FIRE UPDATE 7/13/26 10:23am

Acres: 488 acres Containment: 0%

Start Date: 7/9/2026 Cause: Lightning

Fuels: Timber (litter and understory), heavy logging slash

Resources: 275 total personnel including: 15 engines, 8 smokejumpers, 6 Repeller, 1 dozer, 1 Type 2 Fire Module, 3 Type 2 IA Crews, 2 Suppression Modules, 2 Taskforce Leaders, 1 Ambulance

Fire Information: (970) 299-5357

Yesterday, crews on the Elk Fire continued to utilize aviation resources to limit large runs and maintain moderate fire behavior. The fire progressed to the north and slightly east under yesterday’s weather conditions. Rappelers and smokejumpers worked along the western and southern portions of the fire to slow advancement toward the Elk Creek area. A wildland fire module (WFM) will be inserted today near Elk Creek to implement confinement strategies; WFM are self-sufficient, highly trained teams specializing in technical fire operations.

Elk Fire Update: July 12 – 10:30 am

Acres: 344 acres Containment: 0%

Start Date: 7/9/2026 Cause: Lightning

Fuels: Timber (litter and understory), heavy logging slash

Resources: 133 total personnel: 3 hand crews, 8 smokejumpers, 6 rappelers, 1 engine

Fire Information: (970) 299-5357

The Elk Fire, north of Lake City, Colorado, continues to burn in the Uncompahgre Wilderness with 0% containment.  Heavy concentrations of dead timber (70-90%) combined with relative humidity in the teens, exceptional drought, and critical fuel moistures are contributing to torching, short crown runs, and spot fires. Spotting is occurring up to ¾ miles into heavy dead and down timber.

Today marks a change in how the fire is being managed. Due to the fire’s extremely remote location and the inability to reach the fire by ground, firefighters will shift to more indirect suppression tactics. The risk of snags and the inability to perform a ground extraction in the event of a medical emergency helped form this decision. Firefighter safety remains the top priority.

The incident remains under a full suppression strategy. Crews will use Potential Operational Delineation (POD) lines to help contain the fire. POD lines are large, pre-identified geographic features such as roads, rivers, and mountain ridges, that can be used as natural or constructed control lines during wildfire operations.

On the Alpha Division, crews will assess opportunities to prepare indirect fireline and improve protection for values at risk. On the X-Ray Division, firefighters will work with aircraft to help moderate fire behavior and slow the fire’s spread. A Structure Division will assess structures along the Highway 149 corridor and north of the fire.

Hinsdale County issues a preparedness alert message this morning. It is important that everyone make and maintain an evacuation plan. As the Elk Fire continues to develop and grow, different areas of the county may become at risk, so everyone needs to stay alert and be prepared. Here are a few tips to help you prepare:

  • Have an evacuation plan for your family and animals.
  • Put together a go kit.
  • Create a checklist of valuables if you need to leave quickly.
  • Register for Hinsdale County Alerts to get emergency updates (https://hinsdale.genasys.com/portal/en).

Weather today will be sunny to partly sunny, with highs near 70 degrees and 15-20% humidity. Winds will be from the southeast, shifting to the east at 8-12 mph, with gusts to 20 mph. Afternoon thunderstorms may produce gusty, erratic winds that could increase fire activity.

Smoke will remain visible from the Lake City and Gunnison areas.

NO DRONE ZONE: A temporary flight restriction is in place.

A fire information line has been established and will be staffed daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. That number is (970) 299-5357. Elk fire Update - Be Prepared! 7/11/2026 9:00pm

Lake City

July 11 – 9 p.m.

Elk Fire Update

This morning the Wyoming Interagency Management Type 3 Team One assumed command of the Elk Mountain Fire, led by Incident Commanders Isaac Bayer and Matt Weakland. Located north of Lake City, the Elk Fire is estimated at 189 acres and is burning in the Uncompahgre Wilderness, approximately 2.5 miles west of Highway 149. The fire started naturally on July 9th by lightning.

Ground crews, helicopters and air tankers dropping retardant and water have been utilized over the past 2 days to try and contain the fire. Despite all of the resources working on the fire, containment continues to remain at 0%. Steep slopes, shifty winds and dead and downed trees are making the fire resist to the suppression efforts so far.

Hinsdale County and the Incident Management Team want to reiterate the importance of everyone making and maintaining an evacuation plan.

The fire area is comprised of extremely remote wilderness, with zero ground access, resulting in the aerial insertion of firefighters. As relative risk is continually evaluated, Team One is committed to allocating firefighters in locations with the highest probability of success and risk assumed is aligned with the threat to critical values.

Fire activity remained active, with burning in heavy dead and down fuels, isolated torching, short crown runs, and spotting observed up to ¼ mile ahead of the main fire. Increased smoke was visible throughout the day as fire activity intensified. There are currently 133 personnel assigned to the incident, with additional resources ordered to support suppression efforts and will likely be visible within the Gunnison and Lake City areas.

The top priority remains the safety of firefighters and the public. Frequent and effective communication will be the expectation of Team One. We sincerely thank the citizens and Agency Officials that reside in Hinsdale and Gunnison Counties for their support and patience as best management practices are implemented on the Elk Fire.

Fire updates will provided daily through email and on the Hinsdale County Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/hinsdalecountycolorado/ and Lake City locals Facebook page. The GMUG Forest Service Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/GMUG.NFwill also contain updates.

We will continue to provide updates as they become available while we work through this incident together.

Elk Fire Update 7/10/26

Lake City – 9 a.m.

The Elk Fire on the upper edge of Hinsdale County is now estimated to be between 20 and 30 acres. The fire is burning in the Uncompahgre Wilderness, located between the Elk Creek and Little Elk Creek drainages, approximately 3.5 miles west of Highway 149. The fire is approximately 7 miles north west of Lake City.

The fire was first reported at 9:45 a.m. on July 9. Since then, the Forest Service has been working to contain the fire.  Fire personnel inserted six rappelers and seven local firefighters to conduct direct suppression efforts. An additional 20‑person crew is scheduled to arrive this morning to support containment operations and a Type 3 Incident Management Team has been ordered.

“During suppression efforts yesterday, the forest service used every available resource to try and keep the Elk Fire as small as possible,” said Hinsdale County Emergency Manager Phil Graham. “Helicopters, single engine air tankers, large air tankers and numerous ground resources worked late into the evening on suppression efforts. Crews have re-engaged on the fire this morning in an effort to identify and extinguish hotspots and continue the mop up process.”

The fire is burning in rugged terrain within wilderness boundaries, complicating access and requiring specialized resources. Crews are working to establish containment and limit the potential for growth. There are no threats to communities or infrastructure at this time.

The safety of firefighters and the public remains the Forest Service’s first priority. The public is reminded to stay aware of changing conditions, follow local guidance and avoid the area while firefighters are working.

The GMUG, Hinsdale County and Lake City remains under Stage 2 Fire Restrictions.

Hinsdale County Office of Emergency Management, Hinsdale County Sheriff Office and Lake City Fire Rescue continue to closely monitor the situation. Updates will be provided when available. Information on the Elk Fire, the Gold Mountain Fire or any other Colorado fire is available at: https://app.watchduty.org/ or  https://inciweb.wildfire.gov/.

RED FLAG WARNING

Hinsdale County is under a Red Flag Warning for July 1 and July 2. Red Flag Warning is in place due to gusty winds, low humidity and fry fuels. Winds of 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph. Relative humidity is 5 to 10 percent. During a Red Flag Warning fires will catch and spread quickly. Exercise extreme caution.

All lands in Hinsdale County are currently under a Stage 2 Fire Ban, including Town of Lake City and all public lands. Outdoor fires of any kind are prohibited.
